Five Approaches to Qualitative Research

Qualitative research includes several core approaches that help scholars explore meaning, experience, culture, and social processes. The five major approaches (Creswell & Poth) are: Narrative Research, Phenomenology, Grounded Theory, Ethnography, and Case Study.

Grounded Theory	Builds a theory based on data collected from participants using constant comparison.	Interviews, observations, memos	When aiming to develop or refine a theory.

Case Study	In-depth analysis of a bounded system (a program, event, individual, or organization).	Interviews, documents, observations, artifacts	When the focus is understanding a specific case deeply.
Bounded System	A clearly defined case with limits (time, place, activity).	Research design stage	When setting parameters of the study.
Triangulation	Using multiple data sources to strengthen credibility.	Documents, interviews, observations	When examining a case or phenomenon from multiple angles.
Latency	The presence of underlying or unspoken meanings, social dynamics, or cultural forces that are not immediately visible in participant accounts.
